Often people are surprised to find out there is hula dancing in our wintery climate. But we get to escape to the tropical islands of Polynesia at least once a week! We learn hula, Tahitian, Maori and Samoan dances but we also get to learn about the culture and history.
I am part of the Tiare program and each week with my pa’u (skirt), implements, notebook and Hawaiian dictionary in hand, I get to be immersed in the rich Polynesian cultures. Each class starts with aloha and our entrance chant. Dancing has been part of me for most of my life but it wasn’t until I started Polynesian dancing that I really found my passion. There is a special connection that comes with these dances. My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner – but I’m glad I did and you are never to old to start!
So I was curious why others started Polynesian dance. I asked some of our haumana (students) what they thought about dancing with A Hawaiian Holiday. Check out our video to see what they had to say.
